What kinds of people seek counselling?
People of every age, gender, social/economic background, ethnicity, race, cultural background, sexual orientation, religion or faith, employment status, physical ability or political background, seek counselling.
How do I know if I need counselling?
This is something only you can decide, but just talking through some things that have been troubling you, with someone who is not a friend or a member of your family, can really make a difference.
If I seek counselling, does that mean I have failed?
Actually asking for help is the opposite. Recognising that you may need help, and being able to ask for it, can be seen as an indication of strength.
How long does a counselling session last?
The counselling “hour” is 50 minutes long.
Is counselling confidential?
Your counsellor would not break your confidence, without your permission, under normal circumstances. The only time your counsellor might break confidentiality would be if there was a risk of harm to you or to others, or if required to by law.
Will my counsellor give me advice?
Your counsellor will be there to help you find a way to make your own decisions about your own life, after all, no one knows you better than you know yourself.
What kinds of things can I talk about with my counsellor?
You can discuss anything that you find upsetting, painful, or that causes you unhappiness. It can be issues from your past, or things that impact your everyday life, or worries about the future. It may be something that you can't quite put your finger on
Can I decide to stop seeing my counsellor if I want to?
Ideally, this is something to be discussed with your counsellor, but ultimately it is your decision whether to and when to “finish” with your counsellor.
